Obituary of Lillian D. Slay

Funeral services for Lillian D. Slay, age 95, of LaFayette, will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at Chapel Hill Methodist Church with Bro. Russell Williams officiating.  Burial will follow at the adjoining cemetery with Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The family will receive friends at the church from 5:30 to 8:00 pm on Monday, April 29, 2024. Mrs. Slay will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 9:00 am on Tuesday.

Mrs. Slay passed away at her home on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

Survivors include two daughters, Jane Elliott (Rickey) of LaFayette and Mary Terry (Rusty) of Lanett; three sons, Simmie Slay (Charlene) of LaFayette, John Slay of LaFayette, and Phil Slay (Kim) of Five Points; 15 grandchildren, Sally Slay (David Cook), Scott Slay (Margaret), George Slay (Katie), Tyler Slay (Amanda), Sarah Ruffin (David), Richard Elliott (Emily), Robert Elliott (Megan), Jonathan Elliott (Bess), Abby Hengeveld (Evan), Russell Terry, Andrew Terry (Cierra), Rachel Beasley (Nick), Zac Slay, Hannah Slay Capless (Matt), and Audra Slay; 23 great-grandchildren, Cruz, Grayson, Ford, and Laney Jane Slay, Rainy Wooten, Titus, Jude, Lillian, and Zelda Elliott, Emily, Owen, Jack, and Jonah Hengeveld, Molly, Milk, Ida, Caroline, and Claire Terry, Waylon Beasley, Benjamin Todd and John Levi Slay, Prather and Clyde Ruffin; and a special cousin, Trisha Swope.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

A Chambers County native, Mrs. Slay was born October 5, 1928, the daughter of James H. and Jewel Swope Daniel.  She was a homemaker and a member of Chapel Hill Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Farmers Federation Women’s Committee and had served as its president for many years.  She was also a member of Hamburg/Five Points Homemakers’ Club.  Mrs. Slay was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Prather Slay.

Memorials may be floral, or the family suggests contributions to Mt. Hickory or Chapel Hill Methodist Church, c/o Quattlebaum Funeral Home, 319 College Street, Roanoke, AL 36274.
