Jerry and Chellis Daniel posted a condolence
Monday, April 29, 2024
Jerry Daniel is her first cousin. Her father Janes Daniel and Jerry's father Jeff Daniel were brothers. When Lillian and Prather had Slays Apple Barn, Jerry and his wife Chellis liked to visit with them. One time, Chellis locked the keys in the car, and Lillian graciously let them use her car to go back to Opelika to get a spare key. She gave them a wonderful tour and history of her nearby pioneer cabin that was filled with antiques. She was such a sweet and giving person who cared and shared with others.

May the memories made in days gone by sustain each in the moments and days ahead.
Ms Lillian had such a sweet spirit. She was very involved in Farmers Federation and was an encouragement to all that knew her.

I remember that when I was a small child Prather and Lillian Slay owned a dairy near our small farm in South Mississippi. In 1961 NASA took their land as part of a 125,000 acre buffer zone for testing the Saturn V rockets for the Apollo Space Program. When that happened they returned to their home state of Alabama and purchased their beautiful home and a large farm complete with apple orchards.
Although they had only been friends with my parents for a few years a very strong bond was forged. Mr Prather and Miss Lillian had five children just like my parents and even though we were a bit older than the Slay children we shared a great love for one another.
I could sit forever being entertained by Mr Prather's stories...especially the ones about how he met and married his bride Miss Lillian. It is important to note that "Mama Lil" as the Grandchildren called her was a wonderful cook and I would always pass up the dessert being served at that long oak dining table to just have one more of her delicious cornbread sticks. And I will always appreciate that Miss Lillian was the one who spurred my interest in reading when she would buy me my very own books in the Nancy Drew Mystery's series.
For this young Southern girl they were both such an inspiration to appreciate the love of God, family and hard work! Mr Prather and Miss Lillian will always hold a special place in my heart and my memories.
Over the years there had never been much money in our family budget for travel, but a drive along back roads to see our dear friends, the Slays, happened every year. Because I loved and missed them so much I remember crying just as much as John did every time that we had to leave Alabama after a couple of days visiting with our special friends.
Now I am crying again. Miss Lillian we are going to miss you so very much...
