Obituary of Wyner Slay Phillips
Funeral services for Wyner Slay Phillips, age 82, of Roanoke will be held on Monday, August 30, 2021, at 2:00 PM at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jack Womack and Rev. Scott Hannah officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00-2:00 PM on Monday, August 30 before services begin.
Mr. Phillips passed away Friday, August 27, 2021, at his residence.
Survivors include Jane H. Phillips; children, W. Slay Phillips, II, of Austin, TX, Chase Phillips Kilgore of Wadley, and Julian Palmer Phillips (Brooke) of Austin, TX; three grandchildren, Jane Morrison Kilgore (fiancé, Ryan Rhoades), Evelyn Marguerite Phillips, and Josephine Myrl Phillips; and two sisters, Mary Ann Phillips Vann (Bernard) of Phenix City, AL, and Jane Phillips Cato (Tommy) of Roanoke.
Pallbearers will be Drew Phillips, Rich Phillips, Ryan Rhoades, and Justin Cato.
A Randolph County native, Mr. Phillips was born on April 4, 1939, the son of James Palmer “J. P.” and Mary Will Chase Phillips. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Roanoke where he served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. He served in the Alabama National Guard and was the owner of Phillips Brothers Hardware. Mr. Phillips was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and a curator for the Randolph County Historical Museum. He loved history and the Antebellum period and specifically the history of Roanoke and Randolph County. Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, J. Frank Phillips.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Roanoke or to High Pine Baptist Church.
