Obituary of Philip Gerald Henson

Funeral services for Philip G. Henson, age 59, of Roanoke will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2014, at 11:00 am from Roanoke First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ralph Barrow officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens with Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday. Mr. Henson will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 10:00 am on Saturday.
Mr. Henson passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham.
Survivors include his wife, Karene Childress Henson of Roanoke; one son, Wesley Philip Henson (wife, Patty)of Madison; one brother, Floyd Larry Henson (wife, Betty) of Greenville, AL; a granddaughter; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy Revis, Randall Elton, Dr. George Childress, Scott Childress, Dr. Whit Welch and Bob Fincher.
A Greenville, Alabama native, Mr. Henson was born on December 11, 1954, the son of Floyd James and Rosa Nell Franks Henson. He attended Auburn University and earned his BS in Education from Troy University. He completed his Master’s Degree at LaGrange College, his Educational Specialist at Jacksonville State University, and PhD at Suffield University. He was a member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church and had served with his wife as Youth Leaders at Rock Mills Methodist Church during the early years of their marriage. He was an active volunteer for many community charitable organizations, including Parents Anonymous. He served the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke as its secretary for many years. He was retired from the Roanoke City Schools, serving as 6th grade science teacher for 20+ years, as well as ISS director for three years. He was a member of AEA, NEA, REA and past President of Partners in Education.
Mr. Henson was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Roanoke First United Methodist Church (P O Box 40, Roanoke, AL 36274) or Handley Middle School Nature Trail (c/o Karene Henson, 243 Guy Street, Roanoke, AL 36274).

About Us
Quattlebaum’s was founded in 1930 by Robert B. Quattlebaum on Roanoke’s West Point Street. Relocated to Maple Drive, Quattlebaum Funeral Home was just across from Knight Sanatorium for many years. In 1953, a new building was constructed on College Street – where the funeral home is today.
